Summary

A coming-of-age novel about the power of imagination at times of confinement and displacement.

A city boy, an evacuated family, a gang of countryside kids.

Against the backdrop of an Italy grappling with the difficulties of the Second World War, Cinquetti frescoes the portrait of an unforgettable protagonist, telling with grace and delicacy his inner world and his imaginative drive. Riding his bike “Gloria”, Martino tackles the climbs and descents of life, mirrors himself in the great champions of cycling and dreams of his own Giro d'Italia. A complex historical moment that, as in the tradition of the great classics of literature, we look at from the gaze of a boy who is growing up, especially through his shortcomings. A coming-of-age novel that has the merit of being difficult to ascribe to a specific age of reference.
