Summary

Book 1:

The time has come: like their parents before them, twins Stig and Tilde, having turned 14, must set out for an island and survive there on their own for a month (a tradition called Kulku). But they get off to a rough start. Because of bad weather, their boat founders on the wrong island during the night. As the two turn their energies to survival, Stig devotes himself to repairing the boat. While exploring the hinterland, Tilde runs into a strange boy, Arne, who teaches her how to hunt with a bow and arrow. Arne is a ghost: he reveals that he was murdered decades ago by someone named Matilda… On the fifth day, Tilde says her goodbyes to Arne but he asks her to stay with him forever, sticking an arrow in his own neck! Tilde manages to get away from him, and though the ghost gives chase, the twins manage to flee the island aboard their craft.
